First Edition

June 1999

In case you haven't noticed, we've moved. Our new location is two doors north of the original store, in the building previously occupied by the Chamber of Commerce.

We'll be holding Internet classes soon, initially geared toward beginners. There will be 3 or 4 people in a class. If you are interested in attending, please call or email us for more info. We have a few people signed up already.

If you like music, you'll love this site: www.soundavenue.com You choose the type of music, 24 hrs a day. Thanks to Jack Parisi for this link.

Internet tip: If you have installed Internet Explorer 5.0 and aren't getting the disconnect prompt when closing the browser, here is a fix:

1) Open Internet Explorer 5.0.

2) Select the 'Tools' menu and select 'Internet Options...'. (The 'Internet Options' dialog box appears.)

3) Click the 'Connections' tab.

4) In the 'Dial-up settings' group, select the dial-up connection you use to connect to the Internet.

5) Click 'Settings...'. (The '<dial-up> Settings' dialog box appears.)

6) In the 'Dial-up settings' group, click 'Advanced'. (The 'Advanced Dial-Up' dialog box appears.)

7) Select the 'Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed' check box, and click 'OK'.

8) To close the 'Advanced Dial-Up' dialog box, click 'OK'. (The '<dial-up> Settings' dialog box reappears.)

9) To close '<dial-up> Settings' dialog box, click 'OK'. (The 'Internet Options' dialog box reappears.)

10) To close the 'Internet Options' dialog box, click 'OK'.

NOTE: When you close Internet Explorer 5.0, you will be prompted to disconnect from the Internet. If any other programs which use the Internet are open (such as Outlook Express), you will not be prompted to disconnect from the Internet until those specific programs are closed.

Upcoming Events:

We have begun work on a class room where you will be able to have a TV/VCR and a computer to learn software from video tapes. So far we have tapes for Quick Books Pro and Windows 98. (More to follow as we progress)

This Issue's Tech Tip:

Ram Memory and hard drive space are not the same. Programs are stored on the hard drive and are saved there even with the computer turned off. Memory is space on Ram chips temporarily used for running programs, and for unsaved documents, etc. (that's why you lose unsaved documents if the power goes off). Generally, the more memory you have, the more programs you can run all at once. And you can load bigger programs. Accessing files in memory is much faster than getting them from the hard drive. So, if more files can be loaded in memory your programs can operate faster. That's why if you receive "Out of memory errors", it won't do any good to delete programs from your hard drive. What should be done is to add Ram memory chips, or remove unneeded programs from the start-up group, win.ini, system registry, config.sys, or autoexec.bat files. Note: Improperly removing programs (deleting folders from the hard drive) can cause errors when Windows starts involving the system.ini and/or the system registry(Windows 95/98).

The general rule of thumb for memory is "More is better".

Happy Computing ! -Lee

From the front desk:

We are looking forward to finishing our classroom. We will offer at-your-own-pace training on Windows 98 and Quick Books, beginner through advanced. Classes will be scheduled by appointment. We had thought about scheduling one day a week but would like your input, or any ideas you might have to make this work for all of us. We will be offering individual booths with a computer, VCR, and television to work from. This way you can work and learn at your own speed. In the near future we will be offering Internet classes for beginners through higher levels of skills. Get in touch with us for more info.

It is spring and time for spring cleaning, and we would like to remind you not to forget your computer. It should be cleaned regularly, and for the occasion we are offering a coupon to do just that. You can get a copy of our coupon from the newspaper, here in the store, or you can visit our website from the link in this newsletter. You can print your own copy there. Just bring the coupon in and get your computer spring cleaned.

We will also be holding a Chamber Coffee on Friday June 25th from 9:30-10:30 am. We will be serving coffee and rolls, and would enjoy a visit from you to show off our new building. Please feel free to attend and bring a friend with you.

Thank You from Don, Cathy, and Lee
